SOPHIA: A JOURNEY OF 75 YEARS

Sophia College for Women, founded in 1941, is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It is run by the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus under the aegis of the Governing Body of the Society for the Higher Education of Women in India. Since its inception, Sophia College, now in its Platinum Jubilee year, has been responding to the changing needs of women in our society. Our aim has been to meet the demands of the new age learner by encouraging cognitive development with growth in wisdom, fusing a global perspective with local sensibility, and self-reliance with a spirit of service.
Sophia College, today, is a NAAC re-accredited ‘A’ Grade college with a CGPA of 3.70 out of 4 as of 2015, featuring in the top ten colleges of the country. The focus of the College is to provide quality higher education for women from junior college to the post-graduate level, with undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, Mass Media, and Information Technology, in addition to vocational training. We aim to make the Sophia educational experience vibrant and student centred. To that end, the college is equipped with a state-of-the-art Library and Information Centre, science laboratories, five computer laboratories, multiple audio-visual rooms, an Instrumentation Room, a Convention Centre, Counselling Centre, Placement Cell, gymnasium, basketball and badminton courts. The College is ensconced in an iconic heritage building with picturesque outdoor areas for student recreation and reflection. A distinguished addition to our campus is the Sophia Centre for Women’s Studies and Development that fosters academic research, teaching, advocacy, and community partnerships for women’s empowerment.
